The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a group that contests the news waves with bandits and kidnappers in Nigeria as they play politics with the education of the youths. ASUU’s popularity or news worthiness is borne out of the ubiquitous strikes that have brought more pains to the entire country in recent times. In most cases, it seems, ASUU waits for the government to commit one blunder in order to respond with a blundering strike.
The academics are supposed to be respected members of the society bearing in mind their intellectual ambience but for reasons best known to the drivers of these intellectuals, nothing tangible is coming from them in terms of national development apart from milling out half-baked graduates year after year as students barely complete their syllabus because of strikes. Within a period of 23 years, from 1999 when democracy returned to Nigeria, ASUU – the Nigerian intellectuals – had gone on strike for about 18 times! An intellectual group by now should have fine-tuned its strategies of engaging government in line with democratic principles.
